					<title>What was cool? ... What&apos;s cool?</title>

					<description>&amp;nbsp;This is a retrovisit - through time. May be fun to do yourself ...&amp;nbsp;

Looking back at past years, and remembering what bands were your &amp;quot;top dog&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;dawg&amp;quot; at the time ... the results may be based on foggy memories, but I&apos;m sure they can still be both nostalgic and embarrassing in nature.

Usually to pull a band for that year I need to remember who&apos;s songs I covered a lot, or when there were albums or live DVDs that I totally killed again and again and again.

Musical top dogs ... at the time:

Early Years get called: The Beatles, John Prine, Johnny Horton and whatever else was on the vinyl shelf - or cassettes in the car for long family car rides.

1993: Spin Doctors, Simon &amp;amp; Garfunkel, AC/DC
1994: The Offspring, Guns &apos;n&apos; Roses, Eric Clapton
1995: Aerosmith, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden
1996: Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Live
1997: The Tragically Hip, The Odds, The Wallflowers
1998: Third Eye Blind, Foo Fighters, Sugar Ray
1999: Metallica, Korn, Limp Bizkit
2000: Linkin Park, Creed (ouch), A Perfect Circle
2001: Eve 6, Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World
2002: Incubus, Radiohead, Sevendust
2003: Stone Temple Pilots, Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine
2004: System of a Down, Tool, Mastadon
2005: Tool, Pantera, Nirvana
2007: Feist, Queens of the Stone Age, Wintersleep
2008: Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, James Morrison
2009: The Beatles, Cat Stevens, Queen
2010: Pete Yorn, Wilco, Simon &amp;amp; Garfunkel
2011: Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Ray LaMontagne
2012: Fleet Foxes, Ron Sexsmith ... And ... we&apos;ll see. Excited to find out!

Kind of an odd list ... and kind of a sore brain from digging that deep without Google help.&amp;nbsp;
There are some subtle trends, and total curveballs ... Buuut hey, I went for it ... ringing any bells for you?

Peace out

					<title>Show Tonight! And more recordings soon ... yes</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1964741</link>
					<description>&amp;nbsp;I will be playing an acoustic set tonight, closing down the night at the Company House in Halifax. My good friend, and sometimes co-writer, Tom (Rich) MacGillivray will also be showing off some new tunes; there will also be sets from Noel Taussig and Michael Toner. I&apos;m hitting the stage from 10:30pm-11pm ...&amp;nbsp;

Also, MPATM are the proud new owner of some factor recording grantage ... this means we&apos;ll be hopping into the studio over the coming months to do some recording at Omniart studios. I always throw my name into the factor hat for demo recording support, and i&apos;m always very happy to have the support.

Not sure if we&apos;ll just go for a solid EP with the funds, or get crazy and see hpw far it will stretch ... history says I will stretch, logic says I should beef up a nice 5-6 track EP.

We shall see ... but either way, it shall be grand.

					<title>So you had an idea ... now what?</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1896951</link>
					<description>Last time, I spent a little time urging the &apos;idea monster&apos; inside you to come out and play.
To take a step out towards nurturing some brain children, lest they become orphaned.

Easy to say ... Yet doesn&apos;t happen.

Does that mean it is incredibly difficult? Not necessarily. Just reeeeal easy to blow off.

So, from one scatter brain to another, here are some tips to chase that carrot, &amp;quot;Ideas to help the idea seed grow&amp;quot;.

#1 - Write it down

Seems SO straight forward, but how many times have you said, &amp;quot;Oh and I had this awesome idea yesterday ... it was like ... a giant ... dragon ... laser ... I think&amp;quot;. &amp;quot;Okay, i&apos;ve got my notes here ... Ok, no ... the idea was a chocolate guitar - scratch the dragon laser, for now.&amp;quot;

I had a former employer who handed out mini booklets, and urged everyone to keep them in their coats at all times ... this way if they had an awesome idea at the pub, they could just scratch it down and move on!

Nowadays, my &apos;booklet&apos; is my blackberry ... it is flush with dozens of notes about song ideas, album concepts, photo shoot ideas ... and many of these ideas may in fact be &apos;flush&apos; worthy, but at least I have that option ... unlike forgetting ... which leaves few options, beyond convincing yourself it must have been a sucky idea or you would have remembered!

#2 - Tell someone

... &amp;nbsp;accountability can embarass you into completing some idea, simply because you said you would do it. &amp;quot;Hey, did you do that thing you said you were gonna do?&amp;quot; ... &amp;quot;No.&amp;quot; ... &amp;quot;That&apos;s hella lame, I thought you were the type of guy who ... does stuff ... that he says he will.&amp;quot; That&apos;s a hurtful burn - and you want to avoid that.

So, if you want your task to have a better chance of success, just tell a bunch of people that you plan on doing it. Don&apos;t be so specific with details that it restricts you, because then you&apos;ll be a liar again. (&amp;quot;I mentioned that I was to coat the CDs in gold ... I guess that&apos;s not in the budget. Ditto, for the free iPods for each mp3 download. Too pricey&amp;quot;.

In the spirit of tip #2, I have a declaration ... I&apos;m putting out 2 more releases in 2012; one is the third MPATM album, and the other is a benefit CD of originals to support a local religious community. The MPATM album with have no less than 14 songs on it ... maybe 17? Declaration complete. (See how many details I left out? Lots of wiggle room).

This is easy, and fun for all. Any more declarations out there??? Tell someone.

#3 - review, rethink, revise ... repeat

You&apos;ve got some ideas invested in the creative bank account do you? Nice. Now start to paint the bigger picture.
Look back over the initial ideas and concepts, and gather the direction you want to go. This stage can be as long or as short as you make it. Some people do quadruple the work on revisions and planning - others breeze through, with the finish line in sight.

As much as you may be tempted to fly through, make sure you&apos;re not moving on just for the &apos;Halibut&apos; - just trying to be fast, for fast&apos;s sake. Maybe time is an issue. Maybe budget. Try not to let that dictate how you view the form that your brain child is taking.&amp;nbsp;

I think i&apos;ve given myself a headache today, and may be suffering from the effects of a shining light in the sky ... could it be the sun?&amp;nbsp;

I wrote some stuff ... I declared things.

Check that off the list. Done

					<title>Just do that</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1843386</link>
					<description>&amp;quot;Just do ... that&amp;quot;
Due to similarities to a popular sneaker company&apos;s slogan, I had to watch out for copyright reasons ... Because this ain&apos;t China ... People follow that stuff here!

Anyhow ... Do that! ... Do what? ... Well that&apos;s easy ... Whatever &apos;that&apos; or &apos;it&apos; is.

I would classify myself as an &apos;ideas guy&apos;, always pondering future things ... And although this can be an exciting way to pass minutes, it can also be looked upon as many fruitless minutes if the pondering never amounts to jack squat!

So friggin&apos; do it.

&amp;quot;I should setup that little corner of the room for me to do some painting&amp;quot;

&amp;quot;Man, I really would love to try some fiddle lessons&amp;quot;

&amp;quot;How did that song go, that I used to play on the piano?&amp;quot;

... &amp;quot;Wonder if I should feed my cat&amp;quot;

&amp;quot;The doctor said a simple shower would eliminate a lot of the smell&amp;quot;

Getting off base, but one of my ideas was &amp;quot;write about following through on ideas&amp;quot;, so no matter how much of a pile of heated crap this is ... It&apos;s also a &apos;check&apos; on the idea list.

If I may be direct, all I really care to discuss is music ideas ... Because otherwise I&apos;ll cross the borders of healthy eating and fitness - and that will not receive a &apos;check&apos; from me.

Musical ideas. You&apos;ve had &apos;em. You&apos;ve bailed on your fair share.

And, what of the ones you pursued? Probably didn&apos;t lead to the apocalypse ... Even if not executed exactly as planned; so, go chase some more.

Maybe now you know a few chords, or have a little demo recorded, or love song written, or youtube video circulating, or website up and live ... And so on ... And so on ... it can often be so rewarding to take the time to dedicate yourself to something beyond the daily grind of paying bills, punching the clock, watching television, etc. I know for me I rarely (if ever) regret taking that time to dive into a passion project, and see if it ever brings something close to the idea it started with in my head. In the process of many twists and turns, maybe the song you wrote, or painting you started goes somewhere far from what you envisioned ... but is even cooler!

Seems weird to tell people, &amp;quot;go do stuff that you like, or wish to do&amp;quot; ... But I know sometimes I need that littlie kick, or how hearing others thoughts can be a catalyst. Who knows, maybe you&apos;ll dust off that guitar and look up the chords to an old Beatles favourite tonight, or fire up iMovie and get started on that conspiracy movie for YouTube :)

I&apos;m gonna wrap up for a moment, but this is of interest ... I want to do this again, maybe break it down further. Stay tuned for part 2 of ... At least 2 ... &amp;quot;So you had an idea ... Now what?&amp;quot;

In the meantime, go do something ... If you have the stones ... Or something ... Or not.

But go feed that cat.

					<title>Onward ...</title>

					<description>February ... tad bit of a drag ... no holidays ... winter won&apos;t go away - but the Moncton show was a nice highlight!

Bring on the snow ... we piled a few carloads full from Halifax and headed to Moncton, despite the call for 30cm.

Was a Children&apos;s Wish benefit, and lots of Monctoners braved the elements to come out and make it a great success. Thanks so much!

The theme since then? 3 words: song ... writing ... monster.
-Seems as soon as there is a new CD to push, there are so many of the &apos;next best thing&apos; songs that pop up in the old skull ... we&apos;ve already started debuting a few new tunes at shows, and this week alone has produced 5 new fancy tunes that will fight for a spot on the 3rd release from MPATM - coming out in 2012. (No, I will not get trapped into any estimated release dates yet ... we just put one out a few months ago!) ... but sometimes you just can&apos;t stop the juice from running ... in a white bronco.

					<title>Forecasts for the doomsday of the CD ...</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1511046</link>
					<description>&amp;nbsp;Usually the headlines about the pending end of the earth don&apos;t bother me - doesn&apos;t quite stir anything in me ... but helps me remember that, yes, it will end some day.

Now, a recent headline about some kind &amp;quot;experts&amp;quot; stating that soon many record labels will stop producing physical CDs, as early as the next 1-2 years ... upsetting, and I hope they&apos;re wrong.

Sure it doesn&apos;t make logical sense, but I just enjoy listening to my favourite albums when I am putting in the physical CD ... not clicking a digital file with a mouse. I am not a caveman, I still like to put tunes on my iPod for times on the go - and I love how easy it makes showing your music to people via internet ... but I like to load those digital files FROM the actual CD which I own, and put on my shelf at home.

Even if the future is to have digital music take over a huge, dominant portion of the market - I still want to print CDs ... if Vinyl is any indication, people can keep certain forms of music recordings alive long after they are bumped from the top of the mountain. There will always be hard cores I suppose.

Time to get onboard with lots of online cloud spaces ... Buuuut keep buying (and printing) new CDs!

Stay Classy, Movember men (great work with the staches)

We&apos;ll be rolling in with a bakery fresh new batch of our brand new album &amp;quot;Learning to Lose Control&amp;quot;. 12 tracks of &apos;Modern Rock&apos; - whatever that is ...

Next in line are plans to go play for our peeps in Moncton! Since some of our members are calling the area home, how can we NOT come play soon?&amp;nbsp;
We&apos;re looking to make that happen as soon as possible, and will be looking forward to teaming up with some local talent as well!!!

Thanks to everyone who has been the supporting the new release - grabbing a disc at a show, or online ... coming to a show or two ... kissing the album cover ... wearing the unfolded cd booklet as a hat on rainy days ... Being sure to return it to its case, so it doesn&apos;t get scratched ... all THAT stuff that&apos;s been a help to the new &amp;quot;LTLC&amp;quot; release from &amp;quot;MPATM&amp;quot; ... &amp;quot;-&amp;quot;

Peace out ... for now ... ... ...

					<title>CD Release Show Booked!</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1337613</link>
					<description>&amp;nbsp;Good day to you ... all of you ... good day.

October 7th - all the lies can stop. &amp;quot;When will your CD be ready for sale?&amp;quot; ... &amp;quot;October 7th - no fooling!&amp;quot;
Order is in to the print shop, digital files are submitted for iTunes approval, and venue is booked for the CD release party.

What: MPATM CD Release for &amp;quot;Learning to Lose Control&amp;quot;
When: Friday October 7th, 2011
Where: The Kinsmen Club, (71 First Lake Drive) Lower Sackville NS
Cost: $5 at the door

As a proud Sackvillian ... or Sackvillain, I am oddly thrilled to be playing a private venue booking in Sackville for a cd release. It seems good venues in town are becoming so rare that you have to barter several of your limbs and/or future children to get a decent spot at the cluuubs. And considering the fact that half of our fan support come from Sacktown already, why not &apos;bring the show to the people&apos;. Shaping up to be a great night; one for the Sackville historian&apos;s notebook.

More?
Yes, more

A streamlined faction of MPATM will be playing an acoustic set at the Company House on Tuesday October 18th, as part of an NSCC event. Always a great venue, great sound, and fun to go acoustic from time to time.

More still?
Still ... more

MPATM will be playing on Friday Nov.4th at Montes Showbar in Dartmouth.
More detail on that as they fallout.

Those other dates are just an FYI ... fill your mind with thoughts of the Sacktown party, and the Sacktown party alone!

Until we meet again, and the case is solv&apos;ed.

					<title>New Pics, some radio, and some album sneak previews</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1203876</link>
					<description>&amp;nbsp;Be sure to check the &lt;a href=&quot;./photos.cfm&quot;&gt;&amp;quot;Photos&amp;quot;&amp;nbsp;section of MPATM.com for some new pics from recent shows on the Waterfront, at the Seahorse - and more.

Thanks to Sarah and Kristy for featuring our new single &amp;quot;Bring Me Sunshine&amp;quot; on their &apos;covefm&apos; radio show this week. We&apos;re sending out the masters to CBC, Live 105, Q104 and college stations across Canada in the coming weeks - so we&apos;ll wait to hear for more tracking of our tunes soon!

I&apos;ve also decided to (as a reward for everyone&apos;s patience waiting for this record to get printed and released) post several of the new songs on Sound Cloud.&amp;nbsp;
I would simply post them here, but the site player has some serious limitations with streaming quality ... So check out a few new selections from &apos;Learning to Lose Control&apos; on &lt;a target=&quot;_new&quot; href=&quot;http://soundcloud.com/mpatm&quot;&gt;our Sound Cloud page.

The album artwork is complete ... cd master is in hand - and we&apos;re heading to the print shop, while hunting for the right venue for our release!

Peace for now

					<title>The Arcade, Mixes, 1668, Cover art</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1140457</link>
					<description>Arcade:
Arcade Fire last night ... what can I say? They impressed.
Kicked off with Ready to Start; I was - and so were they. With such a varied catalogue, not necessarily noted by hit singles, I was amazed how many of my pet favourites they hit.

As a unit they were full of intense energy (gave me all I could handle, and likely all they could before nearly passing out from exhaustion), Win Butler played the indie lead role to perfection, while Regine snuck in and stole the show for several surreal moments. I never knew it was her alone banging out the funky drums to the Crown of Love outro, and ending it with Sprawl II was a perfect taste to leave in my mouth. I hope when my daughter is her age, she feels free to dance in front of thousands with swirly ribbons and a gold sequin dress. Or not ... not sure.

From the land of &apos;weird things&apos;, one of my fondest memories and best feelings of the night was when Win counted in Rococo with &amp;quot;Sugar plum fairy, sugar plum fairy&amp;quot;. For anyone who doesn&apos;t know or recall, that is the way John Lennon counted in the first full band demo version of &amp;quot;A Day In The Life&amp;quot; in the studio. I have a clear picture in my mind of Sir George Martin telling the story to the Anthology makers as he played the original reel-to-reel, that just out of nowhere John decided to count in the song using the words sugar plum fairy ... never appeared on the actual release of the greatest (Beatles) song ever - a very cool tribute by AF.

Mixes:
Working tirelessly with Paul MacRae, we now have our running mixes for the album.
One thing about DIY recording and mixing is that you always feel like you could make one more &apos;tweak&apos; since you&apos;re not on a studio&apos;s clock ... but that makes it harder to say &amp;quot;okay, we&apos;re DONE now&amp;quot; ... I believe we&apos;re finally saying that with these mixes, which means they&apos;ll be off to master within the week. Yayaa.

1668:
MPATM is playing a show at Club 1668 on Friday August 5th, with Overnight Enemy (featuring some fellow Sackvillians Andy MacLean and Matthew Wilson). I&apos;ll be sure to post asap with the specifics on when the show starts, when we play, cover charge, etc. If you don&apos;t know club 1668 is on Lower Water, and is next to the big Golden doors of the dragon king, or whatever that Chinese food buffet is called on Lower Water.

Just so happens, I hear there is some kind of beer fest happening that night on the waterfront ... just a quick step across to club 1668 ... with a belly full of international beer ... and an appetite for rock? Beerfest ends around 10pm, which lines up perfectly because the music will not have started, but will be coming soon!

Cover art:
Art design from our resident &apos;awesome designer&apos;, Chad Boutilier is ready to rock ... I sent him a rough black and white sketch of an idea and he turned it into something that certainly makes the eyes follow it&apos;s shapes and flow. Couldn&apos;t be happier, and i&apos;m now designing the rest of the booklet to go along with our soon to be mastered tunes.

Hooray for the weekend ... enjoy Moncton, everyone who&apos;s gonna go see AF and U2 up there.
Party safe.

					<title>Good music out there ... and more here soon!</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=1008878</link>
					<description>&amp;nbsp;Ahoy ... relying heavily on my cd collection of older music lately, i&apos;v decided to try and see if anything new is awesome. So far, mostly sticking with the old discs. Except:

The Strokes - Angles ... Sure we already knew who they were, but with the weak sales of recent efforts they were considering calling it a day after this record. Well, after living it for a good month exclusively I seriously hope they don&apos;t stop making this addictive modern rock. Even my 11 month old enjoys wobbling to these tunes. Only 10 tracks, but filled with riches up until the last note - actually tracks 8, 9, 10 are my favourites. Not a weak moment on this monster ... &amp;quot;Don&apos;t try to stop us, get out of the way&amp;quot;. I won&apos;t ... I will ...

How about Ray-ray? Picked-up a disc from folk-alt-rock-country-guy ... Ray LaMontagne &amp;amp; the pariah dogs. &apos;God willin&apos; and the Creek don&apos;t rise&apos; ... very tasty. Mostly slow, chill jams - with a little hop thrown in for sport ... hard to put anything else in the car stereo right now. &apos;Are we really through&apos; - what a track! Go Ray-ray, Go.

New Eddie Vedder album is good summer listening, although with no major hooks into me yet ... and I hear Ben Harper&apos;s got something delicious going right now ... yeah.

How about MPATM? Recording, done. Mixing, half done. Currently hunting for a good mastering situation, and working on the album art. Probably gonna pick a single asap, and push it to radio before the whole disc is complete ... Maybe &apos;Bring Me Sunshine&apos;. Sounds like a good summer single ...&amp;nbsp;

Until then.

					<title>Is the world going right?</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=767716</link>
					<description>In a strange world of head scratching musical popularity of &amp;quot;icons&amp;quot; like Katy Perry&amp;nbsp;... Justin Beiber ... Lady Gaga ... entertaining, catchy, strongly attacking the teenie-bop market - (good for them) ... there seems to be no escape in sight ... no signs of hope ahead for &amp;quot;bands&amp;quot; writing cool tunes.

And the Grammy for album of the year goes to ... ARCADE FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!! The SUBURBS!!! MY favourite album of the year!!!

So am I going mainstream pop, or is &apos;good&apos; music actually starting to claw back onto the scene. Maybe it&apos;s an abberation ... actually, i&apos;d even call that chance &apos;probable&apos;. At least there is a dim light of hope. This commercial win was so well deserved that it didn&apos;t seem it would happen ... it seems in most awards and competitions that the obvious choice is the one that gets overlooked.

Good for Arcade Fire ... and hopefully, good for many other bands that could get a closer look based on AF&apos;s big accomplishment.

... Just wait ... next people will start buying actual, physical albums in large numbers ... then i&apos;d have to pinch myself even harder!

					<title>Finding Your Voice</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=749176</link>
					<description>What does it all mean Baz? I don&apos;t know ...

Everybody&apos;s searching ... for something ... in a lot of ways that&apos;s a &amp;quot;voice&amp;quot;.
How do you express yourself? How do you find yourself, calm yourself, excite yourself ... find meaning. What&apos;s your voice?

Maybe the answers to these questions are variable, or maybe you don&apos;t know - but I bet your looking.

Some days for me it&apos;s easy ... write a tune.
Other days its just as easy&amp;nbsp;... listen to someone else&apos;s tune.
In a perfect continuum of searching and finding, I strive to get to a place where my creation of songs also serves as a songbook for others to listen to and find a piece of yourself.

Gawdy goals? Sure, but when I think of helping the world with my time here I don&apos;t always think of feeding the hungry in poverty-stricken countries ... bad example, because I actually DO think of that a lot ... but beyond that I want to help &apos;feed&apos; people who are hungry in other ways. In ways that i&apos;m hungry sometimes.

My cupboards have some grub in them, and food is only ever a small drive and credit card swipe away ... but I still hunger. Greatly.
I want more ... bigger ... beyond ... more.

Music is a first stop for dabbling into the great beyond, and i&apos;m thrilled to be blessed with the ability and openness to dive in.
As always, I hope to pull something out of the nether that will stand the test of time ... or help someone on their pursuit by opening a door.

What does it all meean, Baz? What am I even talking about? Maybe nothing. Maybe not, we&apos;ll see&amp;nbsp;

Everybody's searching ... for something ... in a lot of ways that's a &quot;voice&quot;.<br />
How do you express yourself? How do you find yourself, calm yourself, excite yourself ... find meaning. What's your voice?<br />
<br />
Maybe the answers to these questions are variable, or maybe you don't know - but I bet your looking.<br />
<br />
Some days for me it's easy ... write a tune. <br />
Other days its just as easy&nbsp;... listen to someone else's tune.<br />
In a perfect continuum of searching and finding, I strive to get to a place where my creation of songs also serves as a songbook for others to listen to and find a piece of yourself. <br />
<br />
Gawdy goals? Sure, but when I think of helping the world with my time here I don't always think of feeding the hungry in poverty-stricken countries ... bad example, because I actually DO think of that a lot ... but beyond that I want to help 'feed' people who are hungry in other ways. In ways that i'm hungry sometimes.<br />
<br />
My cupboards have some grub in them, and food is only ever a small drive and credit card swipe away ... but I still hunger. Greatly.<br />
I want more ... bigger ... beyond ... more.<br />
<br />
Music is a first stop for dabbling into the great beyond, and i'm thrilled to be blessed with the ability and openness to dive in.<br />
As always, I hope to pull something out of the nether that will stand the test of time ... or help someone on their pursuit by opening a door.<br />
<br />
What does it all meean, Baz? What am I even talking about? Maybe nothing. Maybe not, we'll see&nbsp;<br />

					<title>Q &amp; A With MPATM&apos;s Bassman</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=613471</link>
					<description>Alright, a first instalment of questions for members of MPATM - today we start with Bass player Matt Wight.

MP: Okay Wighty, hit us with a list of your top three Bass players of all time ... and why?

MW:

#3 - Geddy Lee

Geddy Lee has been one of my favorite bassist since I purchase Rush Chronicles at a pawn shop in Montreal, which is a greatest hits double CD. I was probably around 14yrs old and I had only been playing the bass for two years. I had heard of Rush but when I popped the first CD in my discman (yes I said it!) Geddy Lee&apos;s playing stuck out right away. Geddy shreds the bass while singing some catchy hooks and he plays technical melodic bass lines while keeping the progressive rock train chugging. He&apos;s a great player with an extremely distinguishable bass tone and sick bass licks on every songs. Plus he&apos;s Canadian! Doesn&apos;t get any better then that!

#2 -Flea

Flea could arguably be my #1b favorite bassist of all time but he&apos;ll be #2 for this list. Flea is the complete groove rock bass player. He really likes to attack the strings when he&apos;s playing which gives his bass playing some attitude, and he&apos;s got the licks and live stage presence to back it up. Flea doesn&apos;t write bass lines to showcase his talents per se... I truly believe Flea strives to play what is right for each song with bass lines that are occasionally complex and at other times simple but priceless. Flea has made me want to become that type of bass player ever since I first listen to his playing on RHCP - Mother&apos;s Milk. I was hooked on RHCP at Slaine Castle for several years and I recommend it if you would like to get acquainted with Mr. Flea.

#1 - Jaco Pastorius

His debut album in 1972 will be discussed by bass players for an extremely long time. Plain and simple, Jaco revolutionized bass playing. He is my favorite bass player because he is one of a kind, a true original. The sounds he creates with his 4 string fretless Fender Jazz bass are legendary and unmistakable. He has written full songs with harmonics, he plays groovy funk songs like a mad man and he plays extremely fast and complex songs recorded only with himself and his bass. My attempt at a Jaco description: an instrumental songwriter bassist who can play solo and give you goose bumps or lock in with a band and make you groove. His songs are not always instrumental though, he has collaborated with Joni Mitchell (Canadian!) and other singers in the past. Every type of music Jaco plays brings out a different playing style and to some degree, an alter ego. His playing is unorthodox and different which will forever make me believe that as a bass player you must to find &amp;quot;your&amp;quot; sound and differentiate yourself amongst the crowd. Unfortunately, Jaco&apos;s life ended tragically in the early 80&apos;s and ever since bass players have been asking themselves the same question guitarists will about Jimi Hendrix... What kind of music would he be producing today if they was still alive?

If you haven&apos;t listen to Jaco, I strongly recommend his debut CD (titled Jaco Pastorius - 1972) and enjoy listening to the many sounds he discovered a bass could produce. He is also one of the first to remove the frets from an electric bass which he utilizes to produce these extremely rare sounds. Check it!

Ciao

					<title>The Trouble With Indie ...</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=581116</link>
					<description>The Trouble With Indie &amp;hellip;

Blog attack &amp;hellip; whackitty-whack!
Today&amp;rsquo;s topic &amp;ndash; Being &amp;ldquo;Indie&amp;rdquo;; let&amp;rsquo;s begin.

(My loose definition of being &amp;lsquo;indie&amp;rsquo; is simply being an independent musician, working towards goals of some kind of musical career (success), without the support &amp;ndash; financial, time, or otherwise &amp;ndash; of an organized body, like a record label or management company).

&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;

Let me start by saying reasons why being independent kicks ass:

-Freedom
&amp;amp;
-Control

These two points apply to so many aspects, such as: creativity of song writing, choice of artwork, timelines for various milestones, and even your image &amp;hellip; also, just the general feeling that no one is looking over your shoulder &amp;hellip; You&amp;rsquo;re free to be an artist, and control your destiny.

Good, right? Yes, great!
Downside? They are many.

&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;

The main drawbacks are closely intertwined, and they are Time and Money. They are especially connected, since many goods and services could easily be purchased if you had the coin &amp;hellip; but you&amp;rsquo;re indie, so shrink wrap the CD&amp;rsquo;s in saran wrap yourself, at home!

Many people will say you should be able to do it just for fun &amp;hellip; I don&amp;rsquo;t.
Calm down &amp;hellip; of course it IS fun; I enjoy music to a point where &amp;lsquo;enjoy&amp;rsquo; doesn&amp;rsquo;t describe it any longer &amp;hellip; but I don&amp;rsquo;t write, record, perform music just for fun. I want more.

Like millions of others I have long held the dream of paying the bills with music alone &amp;hellip; now if only several million of you would agree to back down, maybe you could help my chances &amp;ndash; but I would never wish to douse a dream. I strive to make a &amp;lsquo;product&amp;rsquo; and an &amp;lsquo;art form&amp;rsquo; all at the same time with my music &amp;hellip; Something I can monetize, but also sit in front of discerning critics and feel confident I&amp;rsquo;ve made something with heart and soul.

Playing shows is fun &amp;hellip; but I also want to reach out some people who respect the goods, make a new &amp;lsquo;fan&amp;rsquo;, gain some respect as being &amp;lsquo;legit&amp;rsquo; on the scene.

Writing songs is fun &amp;hellip; but it&amp;rsquo;s also challenging, fulfilling, maddening, and soothing.

&amp;hellip; Yes it&amp;rsquo;s fun &amp;hellip; but I want more.

&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;

In order to have a chance to advance your craft and your potential for success, do you know the work it takes? It takes a lot.

Gone are the days when the Red Hot Chilli Peppers each received a $1M signing bonus JUST for agreeing to record BloodSugarSexMagik, with a record label &amp;hellip; the coin just isn&amp;rsquo;t there in the record industry &amp;hellip; and even when it was, the competition was fierce.

Now &amp;hellip; just in an attempt to keep pace with what artists offer, I:

-Maintain a &amp;lsquo;.com&amp;rsquo; www.MPATM.com (equipped with Google analytics to monitor traffic).
-a myspace www.myspace.com/matthewpickupandthemovement
-a sonic bids page www.sonicbids.com/matthewpickupandthemovement
-a YouTube page (which needs some more updated vids).
-a Music Nova Scotia Profile
-a CBC Radio 3 page

&amp;hellip; And I&amp;rsquo;m told I need Twitter, Reverb Nation, and a mass e-mail send out host &amp;ndash; just to get up to par ... cover the bases of &amp;lsquo;how people want to find you&amp;rsquo;.

These sites need a calendar of show updates, blogs, pics, vids, updated audio files, etc.

I also
-Research and pursue; CD printing options for short run releases
-Distribution &amp;ndash; iTunes, CD Baby, HMV, CD Plus, etc.
-Gig bookings &amp;ndash; then promote them
-Graphic design, posters
-Sell physical CD&amp;rsquo;s, for those who are &amp;lsquo;old school&amp;rsquo; like myself &amp;hellip; apparently.
-Hounding any Radio, TV, Local papers and Magazines for promo possibilities.

-Upkeep on memberships to MNS, SAC, SOCAN &amp;hellip; fees and a WHOLE SLEW of passwords and user IDs.

The crappy part is, all of these things need to be done better right now &amp;hellip; I can do a better job of keeping things current, and staying on top of certain aspects &amp;hellip; but there&amp;rsquo;s the whole 42.5 hours at work every week, and a family to factor into the 24 hours a day &amp;hellip; oh yes, and sometimes sleep ?

That&amp;rsquo;s the final kicker of being &amp;lsquo;indie&amp;rsquo;. Doing the work of a fulltime job, while still needing an actual fulltime job to pay the bills &amp;hellip; &amp;lsquo;cause the music is costing more often than it pays &amp;hellip; buuut these things can change, as they have for many in the past.

&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;

All in all, the pursuit of the dream makes it all a labour of love &amp;hellip; being &amp;lsquo;indie&amp;rsquo; adds a whole lot of work, but obviously it adds enough perks to keep the train moving.

This train don&amp;rsquo;t stop.

All the best

					<description>Tomorrow night ... Friday, October 29th - we&apos;ll actually be hitting the stage FIRST for the &apos;live 105 audition&apos; at Montes.

Show starts at 10pm ... which means WE start at 10pm!!!
-Not ideal to start things off sometimes because people aren&apos;t there, but with a 10pm start - we should be good to goooooo!

					<title>Live stage ... Full band ... Good times to be had</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=533532</link>
					<description>As you may already know - if you listen to Halifax&apos;s new rock radio station &apos;live 105&apos; - Matthew Pickup &amp;amp; the Movement will be taking part in the live auditions this Friday, Oct.29th @ Montes ... in an attempt to win a slot to open for Finger 11 ... but also in an attempt to have some fun and share our sounds!

The bands starts @ 10pm ... and we&apos;re on second ...&amp;nbsp;with each band playing a half hour set ... awww yeeeah.

There are going to be some &amp;quot;never played live before&amp;quot; songs, which will be fun fun fun ... and a bit of an adventure, considering our drummer lives in Moncton and we won&apos;t even get a runthrough of the set before we take the stage for the real deal! We&apos;ve never had a problem coming together in the clutch, so it&apos;s exciting all over again.

Recap:
Friday, October 29th, 2010.
Montes Showbar on the Waverly Road in Dartmouth.
Music Starts at 10pm, MPATM is on second!!!

...............

While avoiding details for the time being (to protect reputations and perceptions), i&apos;ll simply add that the new album has been held up several times - by reasons that have nothing to do with our musical performance or capability ... or even cash issues, surprisingly ... the holdup&apos;s have everything to do with malfunctioning gear, and recently issues with file conversations ... and blah blah blah ... not our fault ... not in our control ... rolling with the punches, and I think it will create some very good angst and energy for BUSTING out a really pumped-up set on Friday night at Montes!!!!!! YEYAAAHHHH

See you there
Peace

					<title>Sing Us A Song ... Live ... Acoustically</title>
					<link>http://mpatm.com/blog.cfm?feature=674913&amp;postid=496206</link>
					<description>So many updates from my end are wishy-washy, &amp;quot;wrote a bunch of new tunes&amp;quot; ... or &amp;quot;recording is going great, yahoo!&amp;quot; in nature ...&amp;nbsp; but that doesn&apos;t give much substance to people who actually wanna hear some tunes ... well, finally I have something to offer.

This coming Friday, October 15th MPATM will be playing a chillin&apos; acoustic set at The Company House in Halifax. It&apos;s located&amp;nbsp;at 2202 Gottigen Street, and we&apos;ll be hitting the stage at 9pm sharp - playing for 45 minutes or so. It will be a great opportunity to introduce a ton of new material from the upcoming album &apos;Learning to Lose Control&apos;, as we hope to play any new stuff that can fit the acoustic mold.

-Slipping mildly back into &amp;quot;wish-wash&amp;quot; updates&amp;nbsp;- Nick Michaud (Drummer Supreme) came up this weekend and re-recorded all of the drum tracks (12) for LTLC. There were a few tracks from the first batch that needed a redo, and since the tones weren&apos;t quite there, Nick brought up his whole drumset from Moncton and rocked out.

... Further into the future, it looks like we&apos;ll be hitting the full band stage next month at the Paragon Theatre to support Maddison Avenue&apos;s cd release party ... stay tuned for more info on this at it arrives!

Peace

There were a few tracks from the first batch that needed a redo, and since the tones weren't quite there, Nick brought up his whole drumset from Moncton and rocked out.<br />
<br />
... Further into the future, it looks like we'll be hitting the full band stage next month at the Paragon Theatre to support Maddison Avenue's cd release party ... stay tuned for more info on this at it arrives!<br />
