Matthew Pickup & the Movement

From MP: "Paul and I (aside from going to the same highschool), first crossed musical paths when he recorded a demo for my first band 'Bushido', in 2002. It was the first time we worked together, and I distinctly remember it as an intense process. He was trying new things with new software, new gear, and various techniques. We put in many hours in his parents basement doubling ... tripling guitars ... making layers ... simplifying - and experimenting in general. When the product was finished, it was the best recordings I had to date of any of my material and i'm sure he put in so many hours that it hugely blew away whatever budget was quoted ... thats just the way Paul works.

From there Pauly started a more serious studio presence with 'Catfish Studios' opening on the Bedford highway. My band Hurt the Lion recorded a demo with him there, and it was clear he had picked-up a few more tricks and pieces of gear, while keeping the same level of devotion to the craft.

It was probably several years after this before we actually had the notion to join forces musically. MPATM had released our first album "Pursuit of Symmetry" and were playing shows as a trio, when I invited Paul to our jamroom to have some fun and rip some solos. He meshed really well with the other members of the band musically, and he got up to speed on our stuff enough to start playing shows live with us.

His blues and funk feels on the guitar also really helped shape the next direction the material took. Our new album "Learning to Lose Control" has a lot more Funk and Blues based rock, much of which has its roots in our first jamroom session that birthed the riff to 'Lose Control', and the welcoming of songs like 'Scatter' and 'Bring Me Sunshine' into our repetoire ... it made playing live shows a lot more sweaty and fun - and has given us a new life as a rock band.

His tireless work mixing and arranging with me on the new disc has gone a long way to shape the approach we took to this rugged, organic and smokin' album."
