Matthew Pickup & the Movement

Full Name: Matthew Joseph Pickup
Born: December 31st, 1982.
         Halifax, Nova Scotia

Matthew, the third of five boys to Doug & Peggy Pickup, grew up in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. With musical blood from both sides of the family, music was rarely absent from the Pickup house; whether it was the vinyl of The Beatles or cassette tapes of John Prine filling the air. His father sang and played guitar, which led several of his sons to take the instrument from it's case and inflict some damage, and some learning. Matthew credits learning most of what he knows on the guitar from his older brother Shawn, who is currently studying classical guitar in Europe. While many of the other kids at school were buying albums from Boys II Men and Ace of Base, his older brothers fed him a more filling diet of Stone Temple Pilots, The Tragically Hip and Guns 'N Roses.

His first public singing took place through choirs in elementary school, singing his first solo in a grade four production of Anne of Green Gables (with existing scratchy video footage that still serves as severe blackmail), and he also played saxophone in school from grade 6 through to grade 12, learning elements of musical theory and history. It was through music class where he met his first band mates, playing cover tunes and eventually writing original material in highschool. After highschool he headed to university to take business, where he met current bandmate Matt Wight. Now they're looking to advance with what they started years ago.
